Artificial Heart Pump: Flow and Magnetic
Suspension Design
Professor PAUL EUGENE ALLAIRE
A leading cause of death is congestive heart failure. Artificial heart pumps are now sustaining life in many patients and even allowing some patients to recover. This talk discusses the streamlined axial blood flow path in the Lifeflow heart pump, operating at 7,000 rpm, which minimizes blood clots and damage to the blood cells. The pump has a very compact magnetic suspension and motor design which allows for the streamlined blood path. The combined permanent and active magnetic suspension only consumes 2 watts of power. New features include sensing of potential medical problems while the pump is implanted in the patient as sent by wireless means to the medical team. In the past, the author and a team of scientists developed the world's first magnetically suspended artificial heart - the Levacor - tested in Europe and now available for implantation in patients.
