This talk will introduce design and fabrication of photonic MEMS technologies from the viewpoint of optics and photonics physics to applications in different subject areas related to fiber optics communication and biochip will be described. These include optical switch, variable optical attenuator (VOA) and tunable laser. Specific devices on photonics bandgap (PBG) coupling filter and biophotonic chip for cells detection and sorting applications will also be discussed. Current research programs on photonic bandgap and micro-optic-fluidic-system (MOFS) will be briefed via the experimental results. This talk will be concluded with the future trends and research directions in photonic MEMS and silicon photonic bandgap integrated circuit from the viewpoint of physicists and electronic engineers.
